Sustainable clothing for women

Sustainable clothing for women

Humans have been wearing ‘clothes’ to keep us warm and protect our bodies from the elements for tens of thousands of years.

The business of ‘fashion’ is much younger, becoming a global industry in the 18th and 19th centuries, thanks to the first and second Industrial Revolutions.

Spool forward 200 years or so and another shift is underway, driven by climate change and increased consumer demand: sustainable clothes.

More and more people want good quality garments made with sustainability in mind, from the materials’ impact on the planet to the people who produce them.

At AA We Are Eco, the word sustainability isn’t just a label: it’s a weight of responsibility, woven into the heart of every beautiful piece in our collection. Let’s explore why consumers are opting to embrace sustainable clothing for women.

An ethical fashion industry

By 2023, the women’s clothing share of the fashion industry is expected to be worth a staggering $1.3 trillion.

Millions of people around the world depend on clothes manufacture for their livelihoods - but it has become notorious for huge amounts of waste, as well as the unethical treatment of workers.

Of the roughly 100 billion garments manufactured every year, up to 92 million tonnes end up in landfill.

Sadly, this short shelf life doesn’t prevent big names from churning out thousands of new clothes, many made using cheap labour in poor countries with little or no legal protections for their staff.

We are an ethical, sustainable alternative.

Combining function and style

For thousands of years, women’s clothes had to be little more than practical. Most women didn’t possess a wardrobe, much less have lots of clothes to put in it.

However, when fashion went global, clothing design also needed to be fashionable: style became as essential as function.

What customers shopping today have found is they can demand both style and function in the design of their clothes without compromising the planet.

Increasingly, more are opting for clothes choices that are also kinder to their skin, favouring natural fibres, like our organic cotton, over their synthetic counterparts.

Practical and pretty: Indian cotton

Cotton was used as a clothes fabric as far back as 5,000 BC. Fragments have been found as far afield as Mexico, China and Egypt.

In the1600s, rare cotton from India was imported to Europe by the East India Company, a journey that eventually led to the creation of the UK and European cotton industries.

To this day, Indian cotton remains a prized material. It is used every year to make everything from designer dresses to packaging, with myriad firms shipping them all over the globe.

This sustainable, quality material is the foundation of our organic cotton clothes and accessories range.

Our organic cotton: chemical free and kind to the planet

We all love to bag a bargain but we also know that more customers want to make sustainable choices and minimise waste when shopping for new clothes.

Buyers around the world love to wear lots of quality dresses, shirts and trousers that showcase someone’s essential skills, while also helping ensure they earn a good livelihood.

To that end, we choose to use organic cotton in the manufacture of all our products. It needs less water to grow and emits fewer greenhouse gases.

To minimise waste, and ensure we are transparent about our impact on the planet, we source our organic cotton through a chemical-free approach that relies on organic farming practices.

Working with Mumbai-based business Masala Threads, as well as local non-profit organisations, we designed and created organic cotton women’s clothes that are practical and beautiful.

By keeping the range small, it makes it easier to avoid our products ending up in landfill. We are proud to embody the word sustainability.

One of the biggest advantages of using organic cotton in women’s clothes is its flexibility. You can do almost anything to it yet it will always look and feel amazing.
